Rollo May appears

Rollo May
I once had dinner with some good friends in Oakland, CA. They told me they had invited over someone they wanted me to meet. Soon this charming old lady arrived and after some conversation, I realized she was the widow of the famous psychologist Rollo May

I was astonished and effused probably too much and for too long about how much I admired him. I had been very moved by his books I read in college, such as Love and Will and The Courage to Create. The latter, in fact, I had asked my pro narrator father to record on tape for me to listen to while I worked.

We had a lovely dinner and very much enjoyed each other. At some point she told me she had a stamp of his signature that after his death she used to gift people his books. So I had Rollo May sign my journal in several places! I mean several places!

My inspiration has migrated from traditional materials to working with the field of the psyche as if it were a theater. Many of my recent ideas and inspirations have to do with relationships and how we inhabit the earth and our unique slot in the story of evolution. I wish to use art– or whatever it is I do now– to move the evolution of humanity forward into an increasingly responsive, inclusive and sustainable culture. As globalization flattens peoples into capitalist monoculture I hope to use my art to celebrate historical cultural differences and imagine how we can co-create a rich future together.
